Unless you’re a genuine Mr. Fix-It, assembling a toy or product for your child can be incredibly tedious, whether it’s putting together a bike, helping break in sports equipment, or assembling an air hockey table. If your kid’s birthday or the Holidays are fast approaching, you might be saying to yourself ‘I’ll get it for him/her next year. After all, it’s going to take me long enough to wrap the presents and put together everything else we bought. Putting together an air hockey table is simply too much work.”

Most air hockey tables require very little assembly – some none at all! And the ones that do include all the parts already in the box, so all you need is a spare screwdriver or two (a phillips head will usually do). However, since the air hockey tables that do require assembly need to be flipped over, we recommend that you have at least two people put together the table. Some of the larger air hockey tables can weight as much as 150 pounds.

Was a part not included? Did you lose a part? No problem! Most manufacturers will send you the part if it was not included, or if a part is broken due to use or if you somehow lose the part, the manufacturer can send you that particular part for a nominal charge. If you bought your air hockey table from a retail store, don’t bother calling there and waiting on hold for six hours. Simply call the manufacturer and they’ll take care of it from there.

In addition, most companies include with your purchase of a table a one or two year warranty that covers the entire table, save for light bulbs, fuses, batteries or other items that usually wear down over the course of use. That’s why it’s always important to take proper care of your air hockey table and keep it free from unneccessary abuse once assembled.

Even if you’re not great with tools, your air hockey table will be simple to assemble, so long as you follow the detailed diagrams and pictures inside the box and keep the area around you clean. That way you won’t lose anything and you’ll be playing air hockey in no time at all. Good luck!

The most common strategy in air hockey is to establish a repetitive pattern and wait for the opponent to pull him or herself out of position. A direct shot to the goal is usually successful. Other playing strategies include angling the puck to hit the corners of the goal or changing the pace to misdirect the opponent.
A basic defense is to keep the mallet 6 to 8 inches (about 15-20 cm) in front of the goal to block straight shots, then pull the mallet back to each corner to defend angled shots.

Currently, the only tables that are approved for play and sanctioned by the USAA
(United States Air-Table-Hockey Association) for tournament play are 8-foot
tables manufactured by Dynamo. Approved tables include the Photon, Pro-Style,
older Blue Top, Brown Top, Purple Top or Black Top with unpainted rails.
The HotFlash 2 and other full-size commercial tables with neon lights and/or
painted rails are not approved for USAA play but are still great tables on
which to learn the games .

A classic air hockey table consists of a large silky playing surface,
a contiguous rail to avoid the puck and mallets from going off the table,
and slots in the rail at whichever end of the table that serve as goals.

On the ends of the table in the rear and below the goals, there is usually a puck return.
Furthermore, tables will characteristically have some sort of mechanism that produces a
cushion of air on the play face, with the function of reducing friction and
escalating speed of play

Tips from the professionals

Grip the mallet behind the knob using your fingertips, not on top of it.
This will allow more wrist action and help you be able to move the mallet around the table faster.

In some tables, the technology is eschewed in support of a
slick table face, usually plastic, in the interest of saving money in both
maintenance costs and manufacturing. Note that these tables are officially not
air hockey tables since no air is concerned, conversely, they are still usually
understood to be as such due to the basic resemblance of game play.

Here are some basic rules as defined by the USAA:

A player cannot touch or strike the puck with any part of his/her body or with any object other than the mallet. Doing so causes a foul and possession changes hands.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friendWe wanted a gift that adults could play with our  four-year old and two-year old triplets. This really fits that    criteria…Overall, ok with product. There was minor damage to two of four legs when unpacked. Didn’t have any structural impact, and you can’t see it under the table. I do think very minor changes in packaging would solve this. Taping the box (in addition to the straps) would probably hold the hold package together better. Freight companies can be a little rough on large items like this.Also, the optional scorekeeping tells you to remove the six screws on the puck return on each end, after you just finished adding four to each end in the assembly instructions. You might modify the table instructions to say “install optional scorekeeper at this point” to avoid that.Speed of puck doesn’t seem as fast as the (old…) hockey table at the local Pizza restaurant. But with the young kids, we kind of like that.
